Business Card Size NZ: Standard Dimensions and What to Send Your Printer

A sales rep packing for an Auckland expo should print cards at 90 x 55mm, the standard business card size in New Zealand. That works out to 9 x 5.5cm, or about 3.54 x 2.17 inches. Cards this size fit wallets and cardholders, so they go home in the pockets of the people you meet.

Mix-ups start when artwork is set up for another country. A United States template is 3.5 x 2 inches, which is 1.1mm narrower and 4.2mm shorter than a New Zealand card. A UK file is 85mm wide, so it falls 5mm short.

Quick Answer

A New Zealand business card is 90mm wide and 55mm tall, and our own cards are cut to exactly that.

  • Business card size in mm: 90 x 55
  • Business card size in cm: 9 x 5.5
  • In inches: about 3.54 x 2.17
  • In Australia: the same 90 x 55mm

What Size Is a Business Card in NZ?

The usual size here is 90 x 55mm, and Australia, Denmark, Norway and Sweden use it too. Business cards have no world standard, so each country settled on its own and the gaps run to a few millimetres. Check the size on any template you download before you design on it.

On our custom printed business cards, that size is the standard, so there is nothing extra to request.

Standard Business Card Size NZ

Our full colour business cards are cut to L 90mm x W 55mm on 350gsm gloss art board. Both sides print in spot or full colour at no extra charge. At an expo, that free back side can carry a product photo or your booking link.

Printing runs edge to edge, so a coloured background can fill the whole card. That only prints cleanly with bleed in the file, which the file checks below cover.

Business Cards Size Chart by Country

A few millimetres matter when a file is set up for one size and cut to another. The chart sets the common sizes against each other, with a bank card added for scale.

Where it is usedmmcminches
New Zealand and Australia90 x 559 x 5.53.54 x 2.17
UK and much of Western Europe85 x 558.5 x 5.53.35 x 2.17
United States and Canada88.9 x 50.88.89 x 5.083.5 x 2
Japan91 x 559.1 x 5.53.58 x 2.17
China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore90 x 549 x 5.43.54 x 2.13
Bank cards (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1)85.60 x 53.988.56 x 5.43.37 x 2.13

The NZ business card size sits closest to Japan's and to the 90 x 54mm cut used in parts of Asia. A US card is the shortest in the chart, at 50.8mm tall. If your designer works from an overseas template, check which row it follows before the file goes to print.

How Does a Bank Card Compare?

Credit card dimensions usually follow the ID-1 format in the ISO/IEC 7810 standard. ID-1 measures 85.60 x 53.98mm, and many countries use it for driving licences too. Business card dimensions in New Zealand are 4.4mm longer and about 1mm taller than that.

Cards that share a size are easier to store together, and the UK's 85 x 55mm card is almost a bank card. A New Zealand card is a little bigger, which leaves a few extra millimetres for your name and details.

ID-1 cards also have rounded corners, with a radius of 2.88 to 3.48mm. That rounding is part of the bank card standard, and business cards have no such rule.

Carrying Your Cards at an Expo

Business cards are on our trade show checklist for NZ exhibitors, alongside signage, lanyards and giveaways. Once they are packed, they live in two places: a holder in your jacket and a stand on the counter. Both are made to fit the size of a business card, so they are easy to add to the same order.

Business Card Holder

This holder is made from Brazilian cow hide and can carry your logo. It measures 110 x 70 x 10mm, and its 10mm gusseted pocket holds about 20 business cards. Keep those 20 for walking the floor and leave the rest at your stand.

Each business card holder comes in a black two-part gift box, 80 x 120 x 15mm. A spare one makes a tidy thank you for a new client.

Bamboo Business Card Stand

On the counter, this stand holds up to 100 business cards in a bamboo body with a steel frame. Cards can face out horizontally or vertically, so a portrait design works as well as a wide one.

Your logo goes on the bamboo, in a branding area of 55 x 15mm or 30 x 12mm. The stand measures 110 x 66 x 36mm and comes in a natural kraft box.

3 File Checks Before You Send Artwork

A card cut to the right size still needs a file that prints well. Our free artwork service turns your logo into production ready artwork and sends it to you for approval before anything prints.

Which File Types Work Best?

Vector files are best, so send an AI, EPS or PDF if you have one. Vectors resize without losing quality, which lets our designers drop your logo straight onto our product templates. Embed any images and outline your fonts first.

A PNG, JPG or PSD works too, and our designers will redraw it by hand as a vector. JPEGs need to be over 600px, and Word or GIF files are a last resort.

How Many Pixels Is a Business Card?

Business card size in pixels depends on the resolution your design app uses. At 300 pixels per inch, a 90 x 55mm card works out to about 1063 x 650 pixels.

We list our cards in millimetres, so the pixel count only matters while you design on screen. If your app asks for a page size, type in 90 x 55mm and let it do the maths.

Why Does a Card Need Bleed?

Bleed is extra background that runs past the line where the card is cut. A blade that lands a hair off can leave a thin white edge. That is why designers usually add 3.175 to 6.35mm of bleed on every side.

That matters most for a coloured or photo background. Keep names and phone numbers well inside the edge, and check the edges on your virtual mock-up before you approve it.

How Long Do Expo Cards Take?

Our full colour business cards have a production lead time of 10 working days. If the expo is close, ask about the rush service listed for this card. Delivery comes on top of production, so count back from the opening day with both in mind.

Your mock-up comes before any of that, so leave room for a change or two. If the date is tight, say so in your quote request. A simple habit is to order cards in the same week you book the stand, which keeps them off the last-minute list.

A Quote for Your Expo Cards

We are New Zealand owned and operated, and you will find us at 22 McColl Street in Newmarket, Auckland. Quotes are free and our prices are in NZD, so there is no exchange rate to work out.

Business card printing at Dynamic Gift comes with free artwork design, and free samples are offered on most of our products. You can also call us on 0800 177 666 to talk sizes through before you order.

Bring your logo, card quantity and show date to a business card quote request, and your mock-up comes back at the standard 90 x 55mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the size of a business card in inches?

A New Zealand card at 90 x 55mm is about 3.54 x 2.17 inches. That is close to the US size of 3.5 x 2 inches but not the same, so skip any US preset in your design app. Type in 90 x 55mm instead, or the artwork will come out too small.

Are business cards A7 size?

No, A7 paper is 74 x 105mm, which is wider and longer than any card in our chart. The nearest A size is A8 at 52 x 74mm, and that falls short of a New Zealand card both ways. Business cards follow their own sizes, set country by country.

Do Australian business cards fit New Zealand card holders?

Yes, Australia and New Zealand share the usual size of 90 x 55mm. A card printed in Sydney fits the same holders and wallet slots as one printed in Auckland. A trans-Tasman team can share one design file and one holder order without resizing anything.

Can a business card be portrait?

Yes, a portrait card is the same 90 x 55mm turned on its side, so it stands 55mm wide and 90mm tall. It fits the same wallets and holders, and our bamboo business card stand can show cards vertically as well as horizontally.

How many business cards should I bring to an expo?

No rule sets a number, so plan around how many visitors you hope to talk to. Our business card holder carries about 20 for walking the floor, and the bamboo stand holds up to 100 at your booth. Bring extra so you can refill both as the day goes on.
