Many trades businesses in New Zealand choose between cotton tees and polyester shirts before summer reaches the site. On a roof or an open site, a polyester tee is the safer bet, since the fibre takes up very little moisture and the fabric dries fast. Cotton's soft, everyday comfort suits staff who work indoors, drive between jobs or meet clients.
A mixed crew can order some of each, so polyester vs cotton rarely has to be all or nothing. We matched six garments from our range to the everyday jobs of Kiwi crews, and every fabric fact here comes from the product's own page.
Polyester vs Cotton: What Should Each Crew Wear?
Start with where the shirt gets worn, since heat and sweat decide most of this choice. Each job below gets one garment from our custom t-shirts range or our polos, in cotton, polyester or a blend of the two. Collar or crew neck is a separate question, and our guide to choosing between t-shirts and polo shirts weighs it up.
1. Summer Site Crews: Polyester Mesh Tee
A roofing crew in January is damp with sweat by morning tea, and our Agility men's sports t-shirt suits that job best. It uses 180gsm polyester mesh, a breathable fabric that is lightweight, moisture wicking and fast drying. Raglan sleeves add movement and flexibility for a day of reaching and lifting.
On a roof, drying speed matters more than softness, because the crew wears the same shirt all day. Each one arrives loose packed in a range of sizes, which keeps handing out a crew order simple. On a hot site, this is the polyester t shirt we would brand first.
2. Office and Warehouse Staff: Combed Cotton Tee
Staff who work indoors, at a desk or on a forklift, get the comfort of cotton fabric in our AS Colour men's staple tee. It is 100% combed cotton at 180 GSM, and its page lists a soft feel. Combing strips out the short fibres, so the yarn comes out softer and stronger and frays less.
It works as a daily uniform tee and doubles as an event or giveaway shirt. Pick from over 70 colours in sizes XS to 5XL, then have it embroidered, screen printed or printed in full colour.
3. Corporate Sports Days: Women's Mesh Tee
Office sports days and fun runs need a tee that copes with running, and our Agility women's sports t-shirt stands up to active use. It is 180gsm polyester mesh, with raglan sleeves and a stitched hem and cuffs. Its page lists corporate sports days and team uniforms among the uses it suits.
Polyester clothes suit an afternoon of races, because this fast drying mesh keeps the wearer comfortable through physical activity. With the men's Agility tee above, one design covers the whole office.
4. Front Counter Teams: Heavy Cotton Polo
Reception desks, trade counters and showrooms usually want a collar, and our AS Colour pique polo gives them one in heavy weight cotton. It is 240 GSM, 100% cotton, finished with a two-button placket, tonal buttons and double needle hems.
Heavier cotton suits staff who stand and talk to customers, since drying time matters less indoors. Sizes run S to 5XL, and embroidery, screen printing and full colour print are all listed.
5. Client Visits: Poly Cotton Polo
Site managers often split the day between a dusty site and a client's office, and our Williams men's polo suits both. It is a durable 200gsm pique in a 60/40 blend of cotton and polyester. Its page describes the blend as built for comfort and longevity.
A poly cotton knit sits between the two fibres, with cotton as the larger share. Soft knitted cuffs and collar, a two-button placket and subtle coloured accents keep it smart enough for a meeting. Sizes cover a wide range, so the whole management team can wear the same polo.
6. Golf Days and Outdoor Events: Polyester Polo
Golf days and field days keep staff in the sun for hours, and our Stormtech men's Eclipse H2X-DRY pique polo carries a UPF rating of 40+. It is 100% polyester pique at 140gsm, with H2X-DRY moisture management to keep the wearer dry.
Moisture wicking shirts like this suit outdoor expos too, where staff are on their feet from set-up to pack-down. Its fabric is snag resistant, and print areas reach 100mm x 70mm on the left chest and 260mm x 260mm on the back.
Is Polyester Breathable on a Hot Site?
In a mesh knit, it is. Both our Agility sports tees use polyester mesh, and their pages list it as lightweight and breathable. Polyester material also takes up far less moisture than cotton, which changes how each shirt feels late in a hot shift.
Cotton holds about 8.5% of its dry weight in moisture and polyester about 0.4%, on the official figures in NPTEL textile course notes. So a cotton tee soaks up far more sweat over a long day, and a polyester shirt takes up very little. Both our mesh tees are listed as fast drying as well, which suits a crew that sweats from start to finish.
A summer site also means strong sun. SunSmart NZ advises a tighter weave, darker colours and a top with a collar, and says sun protective clothing should be at least UPF 15. That rating covers the fabric and the cut together, so check the label, not just the fibre.

Our cotton staple tee and both mesh tees share the same 180gsm fabric weight. So for a tee, the choice really comes down to the fibre, not the thickness.
Print Methods and Care by Fibre
Decoration follows the fibre. As our sublimation printing guide explains, sublimation dye bonds with polyester fibres and not with cotton, so the method works best on polyester. Cotton tees and polos take screen printing, embroidery and full colour print, and every style in our AS Colour range offers all three.
On the care side, both cotton picks are built to limit shrinkage. The staple tee is listed with reduced shrinkage, and the pique polo comes pre-shrunk to hold its size. The rest of the uniform needs the same thought, and our workwear guide covers trousers, high-vis vests and waterproof jackets for site crews.
Mesh, Cotton or a Blend for Your Crew?
We brand cotton, polyester and poly cotton shirts for teams across New Zealand, and our polo shirts range adds more collared styles in each fibre. Artwork design is free, with a virtual mock-up for you to approve before anything goes into production. A foreman can try both fabrics on the job before the full order goes in, since most products at Dynamic Gift come with free samples.
Before the summer rush, send your logo, the size mix for each style and your crew numbers with a quote request for cotton or polyester tees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Polyester or cotton for a roofing crew in January?
For physical work outdoors, polyester usually comes out ahead, because it holds far less moisture than cotton and dries quickly between tasks. Cotton suits indoor roles and lighter days, where its soft feel matters more than drying time. A business with both kinds of staff can simply order both.
Why does combed cotton feel softer?
Combing during spinning pulls out the short fibres, and the yarn left behind is smoother, softer and stronger, with less fraying or unravelling. Our AS Colour men's staple tee uses 100% combed cotton at 180 GSM, which gives it the soft feel its product page describes.
Can you sublimate onto a cotton tee?
Not well, because sublimation dye only bonds with polyester fibres. A full colour sublimated design needs a polyester garment or a blend with plenty of polyester in it. For cotton, our AS Colour tees and polos offer screen printing, embroidery and full colour print, and our design team sets up the artwork for free.
Will one quote cover a mixed crew?
Yes. One quote request can cover a mesh tee for the site crew, a cotton tee for the office and polos for staff who meet clients. List each style with its sizes and quantities, and we come back with pricing in New Zealand dollars plus a free artwork proof.
Does polyester protect against the sun?
Polyester clothing can block UV, and the weave, colour and cut decide how well. SunSmart NZ rates a UPF of 15 to 24 as good protection, 25 to 39 as very good and 40 to 50+ as excellent. Our Stormtech men's Eclipse H2X-DRY pique polo carries a UPF rating of 40+, which puts it in that top band.
